For over three decades the Crime Commission has been improving the safety and security of the citizens of Tulsa and the surrounding area. The Crime Commission’s education, anti-violence and public visibility efforts have clearly supported the commission’s three directives of public education, awareness and involvement. Through very successful programs such as Alert Neighbor, Citizen Alert Patrol, and Safe Escape, residents have received information about personal, school, neighborhood and workplace safety as well as crime prevention activities.Since its inception in 1979 the Crime Stopper/Arrest Arson program alone has awarded $400,000 for information that resulted in solving more than 4,500 felony cases while recovering over $12 million in stolen property and narcotics.

The Crime Commission is a non-profit, 501c3, private organization who relies solely on private donations, grant opportunities and city contracts to conduct its business. An outgrowth of the Criminal Justice Task Force created by the Tulsa Chamber of Commerce, the Crime Commission was incorporated in 1971. Currently, there are 26 board members, 2 full-time staff members, 1 part-time office coordinator, and 20 active volunteers who help us implement our 5 core programs: Crime Stoppers (596-COPS), Alert Neighbors/Neighborhood Watch, Citizens Alert Patrol, Arrest Arson (596-ARSN), and Safe Escape.

The Crime Commission is recognized locally and statewide by officials and citizens as an effective tool for addressing community crime problems. The Crime Commission’s unique organization and structure serve as a model for other communities.

The Crime Commission’s stated objectives are to:
• Educate the community about the extent of the crime problem and address its specific impact on the community;
• Develop crime prevention programs geared to specific crime;
• Involve citizens in crime prevention programs to make them, their homes, neighborhoods and businesses safer; and
• Work with appropriate officials to lower the crime rate and to support improvements in the criminal justice system.

The Crime Commission’ programs serve the Tulsa Metropolitan area, the immediate surrounding counties and offer support to all of Northeast Oklahoma.

Crime affects every citizen in our community either directly or indirectly.  Its toll is tangible—increased security measures in our schools; rising consumer prices due to shoplifting and robbery;  increased insurance rates; higher taxes to pay for more law enforcement and larger jails; greater citizen investment in home and personal security devices because of increased fear; and numbness to violence that makes reports of murder seem common place.

Prevention means reducing the opportunity for crime to occur.

The Crime Commission believes that every citizen should be involved in crime prevention because individual action can help stop crime and prevent violence! Together we will make Tulsa and the surrounding area a safer place to live, work and play.
